CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO BONDI BEACH PRECINCT, MAYOR JOHN WAKEFIELD AND THE WAVERLEY POLICE
Last night at the Council Meeting, Mayor John Wakefield moved a motion that the Liquorland DA be rejected as being contrary to the public interest. He specifically cited a lengthy submission against Liquorland coming to Bondi Beach prepared by the Waverley police. The decision was unanimous.

Great meeting last night at the Pavilion. Lively discussion and a big welcome and thank you to the new people who came and contributed. Thanks also to Waverley Council staff for getting together a wonderful DVD of the community inspired 1996 NYE that followed the 1995 'riots.' Alcohol issues are still a hot topic, particularly the problems around binge drinking in the alcohol free zones. There is still a lot of discussion around ideas for a community inclusive NYE. We welcome all ideas - please email them to admin@bondibeachprecinct.com The Report from the BBP Events sub-committee was presented - to read a copy click here.

The Events sub-committee meeting was held in the Ocean Room in the Pavilion. About 30 people attended, among them Council staff and 2 councillors, Cr Clayton, a local ward councillor, and Cr Betts from Dover Heights. There was a mix-up at the start of the meeting, as quite a few representatives from the Chamber of Commerce arrived, having been informed by email that 'Bondi Beach Precinct have an open meeting tonight to debate (and possibly try and stop) ongoing events in Bondi'... When it was explained that the meeting was only an ideas workshop for NYE, and moreover stopping onging events in Bondi has never been expressed by the Bondi Beach Precinct, most left. Vigorous discussion ensued and a lot of data collected. This will be put on the website sometime this week.
*Friday 13 January 2012

BBP Committee members met with Alison Tehan, Licensing and Regulatory Manager for Coles Liquor & Spirit Hotels and Peter Thomas General Manager Property to discuss Coles Liquor's applications for opening a Liquorland in Campbell Pde Bondi Beach. The precinct reps stressed that there will be a lot of community pressure against granting the packaged liquor licence, if the DA for change of use is approved, so NO Liquorland would be the best outcome, particularly as
*the liquorland shop will be in the middle of an extensive Alcohol Free Zone covering the streets, the parklands and the Beach itself, and
* its marketing strategy to heavily discount alcohol, particuarly for holidays and events, will appeal to backpackers, who are not usually responsive to the community concerns about alcohol issues, and youths, many of whom will be underage
*Bondi Beach is regarded as an alcohol 'hot-spot' and is only kept under control by a lot of work from the police, residents and council.
The Coles reps responded by saying they have a strict policy of resposibility, however they are primarily there to make money.
*Wednesday 4 January 2012
Thanks to the Shore Thing team, the sound was noticeably reduced on NYE. Unfortunately other concerns arose as a result of the event (apart from its overall unsuitability to being held at the Beach) as follows:
The Bali Memorial Mural (Chloe's mural) was damaged by scaffolding and fencing being piled up onto it.
The sprinkler system was shut down for a week so the grass died in the heat. The gardens were trampled.
The southern end of the Promenade reeked of urine and was punctuated with vomit the morning after.
A man was seriously bashed in Jacques Ave and is still in an induced coma.
The streets around the beach were and some still are full of bottles and rubbish.
The Sydney Morning Herald has now let all its readers know that no-one takes any notice of the alcohol free zone.

I love a sunburnt country — but the stupidity can be hard to stomach
Elizabeth Farrelly, SMH, April 14, 2011
Most of us happily carp in private but shrink from airing our views publicly - lest we offend the powerful, or look stupid. But this is inside-out. Our public exchanges should be robust and forthright, giving and taking offence as necessary to get to the heart of things. In private - that's where tact and politeness belong. Lick arse (if you must) in private, kick arse in public.Read the rest of the article at:
